If the genre Drum & Bass was to be a program, then the icon hat got to be Grooverider. The moment I saw a
black & white A3 poster with "GROOVERIDER" sprawling across it, I knew I have to check out this gig.
I arrived at the club at 11:00pm, I was shocked to see that there were only about 20 people in the club. So,
you lot in Singapore, stop complaining. On the decks was Antart, who was already churning out wicked
jump-up drum & bass tune. As time passes, the numbers in the club grew and at about 11:45, Via Felsenau was
half filled. At about this time, the Lightjockey decided to switch on the disco lights and MC Matt took
centrestage and started to spit on the bars with his dope rhymes. Together with Antart, they took the
atmosphere in Via Felsenau up a notch. Almost instantly, the the dancefloor was filled.
Antart's dj-set was wicked but sadly he played way too early. At about 12:30am, it is time for VCA to
take over the deck duties. The genre Drum & Bass is always affiliated with dub-plates, so when I saw VCA
was Djing with his lap-top and Stanton's "Final Scratch", maybe it just me, but it just doesn't click.
Overall, VCA set was nice but in comparison to Antart's set, it was a tad too dud.
It's 2pm, the Don has finally arrived. At first glimpse, I thought it was 50 Cents, Grooverider was wearing
over his head, à la 50cents's trademark "bandana underneath the baseball cap" thing. The influence of
Hip Hop! Anyway, DJing with a joint in his mouth, Grooverider took control of the decks and every
space that was available on the dancefloor suddenly disappears. Together with MC Rage, the dynamic duo
literally wreck the atmosphere. Cheers and claps were infused with happy smilling faces. Screw them pictures
because it's time for me to bounce.
What a night!
