Eversince Eric Prydz's Call On Me, the track that uses a sample from Steve Winwood's hit "Valerie"
("Call on me, I'm the same boy I used to be"), stormed the charts, almost every other day a
song from the yesteryears is being remixed and released.
Everyweek on Juno.co.uk, an online records store, out of the plenty new releases, there are atleast ten vinyls
are a remake of an oldie. Some are bad, a few were good but majority are, well, just plain ugly.
Jumping on a winning formula?
Well it certainly looks like it. I posted a thread on Frontal's (a dance webzine from Singapore) Forum, about
this phenomenon and received a few interesting replies.
"I've been playing "Out of Touch" recently on my decks at home, and my mum loves it so much, along with
tracks like "strings of life", "Most Precious Love"... she just fell in love with house." - Spikez
"IMO(in my opinion), its sort of a good thing if it takes the song in a fresh direction. if its just a crap attempt at
remixing a song like Smells like Teen Spirit [Adam Freeland Rmx] then there's no point. BTW(by the way) I do know people who
love that Freeland remix, so to each his own." - Vega a.k.a. Effen
"It's just that people want to bring back memories of classics that rocked their lives. Well, most of the time
the re-works work the dance floor too, right?" - Nailian
From the replies, I came to the conclusion, and totally agree, that it's good thing to remix songs from the past
but all good things could go shitty when it becomes a norm.
But why do some music producers do it? It's time to ask around. What this space!
THE GOOD

Daniel Hope - Love & Pride
A remake of King's 1985 hit single of the same name. Beefy beats with new wave synths and Paul King's husky
voice doing the chorus.
THE BAD

Tears For Fears - Shout
With remixes from Skylark, Fergie & Jakatta but it was Jakatta's Thrilled Out mix that brings this song on a
whole new level. Awesomely Chilled.
THE UGLY

Sevane - Moonlight Shadow (Evidenz France)
A great song by Mike Oldfield and sung by Maggie Reilly. Now revived by Sevane, which is
utterly shit!
